Description

Djarum Super MLD Black Series represents a modern evolution within the mild clove cigarette category, engineered to provide a more substantial experience than traditional low-tar offerings. Developed by PT Djarum, this variant serves as a premium extension of the original MLD line, catering to those who seek a balance between a light smoke and a longer-lasting session. The product is distinguished by its physical dimensions and its presentation in a sleek, minimalist black packaging that signifies its position as a sophisticated collectible.

Brand and Historical Context

The Djarum Super brand has been a cornerstone of the Indonesian tobacco industry since its introduction in 1970. Over the decades, it has become one of the most recognized kretek brands globally, known for its consistent quality and innovation. The MLD (Mild) sub-brand was later introduced to meet the growing demand for cigarettes with lower nicotine and tar yields without sacrificing the essential clove aroma. The Black Series is the latest iteration in this lineage, designed to bridge the gap between the lightness of a mild cigarette and the physical presence of a full-flavor stick.

Tobacco and Clove Composition

The Black Series utilizes a refined blend of high-grade Indonesian tobaccos, primarily sourced from the volcanic soils of Java, which are known for their distinct mineral quality. This tobacco base is integrated with top-tier cloves that have undergone a precise curing process to ensure a clean, sharp crackle upon ignition. The blend is specifically formulated to maintain the “mild” designation while the increased physical volume of the cigarette allows for a denser distribution of the tobacco-clove mixture, resulting in a more consistent draw.

Flavor Profile and Smoking Characteristics

The sensory profile of Djarum Super MLD Black Series is defined by its flawlessly smooth and balanced character. It retains the nuanced, spicy-sweet notes of the original MLD but delivers them with a more substantial mouthfeel. The primary innovation of the Black Series is the “longer burn time,” achieved through a slightly larger cigarette diameter. This allows the smoker to experience a more leisurely pace, where the heat remains stable and the clove flavors do not become overly bitter toward the end of the stick.

Cultural and Collectible Significance

In the context of Indonesian tobacco craftsmanship, the Black Series is viewed as a successful experiment in form and function. It reflects the contemporary trend of “premiumization” within the kretek market, where the aesthetic of the packaging and the physical duration of the smoke are as important as the flavor itself. For collectors, the Black Series is valued for its distinctive black paper and modern design, representing the intersection of traditional Indonesian clove heritage and 21st-century global design standards.
